The Best Sachertorte in Vienna…

is waiting to tempt you at Hotel Sacher, a luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the city. Two things to clarify: 1) Sachertorte is chocolate cake with a twist–chocolate sponge cake with a thin layer of apricot filling and dark chocolate icing, and 2) Hotel Sacher is famed for creating the original Sachertorte over 175 years ago, dating back to 1832. The cake is Vienna’s culinary pride and glory (or at least one of them), as my Viennese friends made it clear after they gushed and rambled on about how not having the original Sachertorte would be the biggest mistake any foodie could make when coming to Vienna. So naturally, I tried it to see what all the fuss was about. Truthfully, I hadn’t even heard of it until I arrived in Vienna and asked my friends what were some must-sees, must-dos, and must-eats in the city. Let me just tell you, they were absolutely right in showering all that effusive praise on this rich delicacy. Just to be fair, I tried Sachertorte in a few other places (yes, I’ve got quite the sweet tooth) that claimed to have the “best” in the city, but they just didn’t compare, AT ALL. By the end of my trip, I had three words for my Viennese friends: Ich liebe Sachertorte (I love Sachertorte)!
