September 21, 2012 :: World Peace Day

I am a huge skeptic of the United Nations, as it’s done very little (close to nothing) in terms of reconciliation and keeping the peace in the world. Today’s status quo is a perfect case in point. But the U.N. still tries, from time to time in its own small way. Since 1982, the U.N. has been observing World Peace Day on September 21 of every year. It’s a day that calls for nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities and commemorate an International Day of Peace. In light of what’s happening in our world today, we need this day more than ever.

The current Secretary-General, Ban-Ki Moon urges everyone to come together and collaborate:

“I urge everyone, between now and 21 September, to think about how they can contribute. Let us work together to ensure that the Road from Rio leads us to sustainable development, sustainable peace… and a secure future for all.”

Here are some ways to celebrate World Peace Day:

  • Attend a peace rally
  • Observe a moment of silence
  • Hang a peace sign proudly
  • Raise a PEACE flag
  • Organize a peace celebration at your school or in your neighborhood
  • Write a letter to the President/Prime Minister of your country about peace and what it means to you
  • Meditate to find your inner peace

These are just some ideas, but the list is endless. How will you contribute to World Peace Day?
