are nestled on the sprawling shelves of trendy downtown French bistro and bakery, Bottega Louie. Just because it’s LA, don’t assume that you’ll find “skinny macarons”; there’s no skimping on size and thickness here. The real differences are the taste, texture, and grand range of flavors. After hearing the endless raves, I walked into the bakery, slightly reluctant to sample another serving of macarons, having just returned from Paris where I indulged in the finest at Ladurée. But with an unbelievably open mind, I took the plunge. *drumroll* I’d be kidding myself (and you) if I said they were better than Ladurée or even Pierre Hermé, but in Los Angeles, it’s the clear winner for me (having tasted the other top LA contender, ‘Lette and bountiful other smaller bakeries). One bite into the creamy, fluffy salted caramel cookie (my favorite!), and my taste buds were dancing and begging for more. With endless flavors that range from passion fruit to earl grey, with textures that are masterfully crispy and chewy, and with a price tag set at $1.75/piece, these little French luxuries are totally worth the splurge and make the perfect holiday gift for foodies.
